Prenatal Care: Trimester by Trimester Guide
Pregnancy is a journey filled with excitement and transformation. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, pregnancy is a time full of hope, wonder, and a little anxiety. Dr. Dinesen, the Director of OB/GYN at Essen Health Care, has had the privilege of helping many women navigate this beautiful yet challenging experience. One of the most effective ways to ensure both maternal and baby health is through proper prenatal care. Prenatal care is broken down into three key trimesters, each with its own unique set of milestones, challenges, and opportunities for support.
In this article, Dr. Dinesen outlines what expecting mothers can expect during each trimester, how prenatal visits work, and provide useful tips to ensure that every step of the way is as informed and supported as possible.
First Trimester: Weeks 1-12
Early Beginnings and Establishing CareThe first trimester is a crucial time for both mother and baby. During this time, the baby’s organs begin to form, and the body undergoes significant hormonal changes. It’s important to focus on self-care, nutrition, and establishing a routine for prenatal care.
What Happens During the First Trimester?By the end of the first trimester, the baby is about 3 inches long and all major organs begin forming.
Expecting mothers may experience fatigue, morning sickness, and emotional fluctuations due to hormonal changes.
If the first prenatal visit hasn’t occurred yet, now is the time. This visit will confirm the pregnancy, calculate the due date, and help create a personalized care plan. It’s also an opportunity to discuss any medical history, risk factors, and get blood tests for screening.
At Essen, we don’t just hand you a due date and send you on your way. We offer same-day in-office ultrasounds to confirm your pregnancy and—just as importantly—reassure you that your baby is doing just fine. We’ll consider your personal health, your goals, your past pregnancies (if any), and create an individualized plan just for you.

Second Trimester: Weeks 13-26
The "Golden" Period of PregnancyThe second trimester is often considered the "golden" period of pregnancy, as many women find their energy returns and morning sickness subsides. It’s also the time when the baby starts to grow more rapidly, and the mother’s belly becomes more noticeable.
What Happens During the Second Trimester?By the end of the second trimester, the baby has grown significantly. Movements may be felt between 18-22 weeks, which can be an exciting milestone.
Between 18-20 weeks, an ultrasound will be conducted to check the baby’s development and to determine the gender if desired.
Prenatal visits occur every 4 weeks, with regular checks for blood pressure, belly measurements, and monitoring of the baby’s heartbeat.
Third Trimester: Weeks 27-40
The Final CountdownThe third trimester is the final stretch of pregnancy, where the baby is fully developed and prepared for birth. This trimester requires more frequent check-ups and increased attention to comfort as the body undergoes significant changes.
What Happens During the Third Trimester?During the third trimester, the baby undergoes rapid weight gain as it prepares for birth.
Expecting mothers will see their OB/GYN every two weeks until the 36th week, then weekly until delivery. These visits monitor the baby’s position, the cervix’s readiness for labor, and check for any signs of preterm labor.
As the body prepares for delivery, mothers may experience Braxton Hicks contractions, which are typically harmless, but can be uncomfortable.
